Rhino poaching: Private farms in Namibia are being targeted now

Two poached, four injured, calf missing

Two more rhinos were poached on a private farm on Saturday Central Namibia and at least four more injured.
This follows exactly eight days after a rhino were poached and another wounded near the capital on a private farm.

"One cow was shot with a hunting rifle and her horns removed. After a
Bull calf's mother was injured, he has died due to the stress of being without his mother, "
Mr. Jaco Muller of the private rhino conservation organization, Help our Rhinos Now Namibia (HorN.nam), said.

"At least four rhinos are injured, namely two cows, one bull and one young
verse. The two cows were treated by a vet, but their condition is critical.
The other two should survive, "Muller said.

He also said that a wounded cow's five-month-old is missing and there are possibly still some injured rhinos because some blood and manure was found on the farm.

Muller spoke to Republican from the private farm in Central Namibia yesterday, where he had his gyrocopter from Monday to help find injured rhinos.

"We are sad and shocked," he said, "especially about the severity of a wounded cow still missing."

Muller said the calf had to be searched by a helicopter because it had to be darted with a gun from the helicopter.

THREE IN CUSTODY

He said the police were already on the scene "and the good news is that three suspects have already been arrested."

This poaching case follows after a rhino had been poached and it's horn removed on November 17th, near Windhoek. Another one was wounded.

The country's rhino poaching figure for this year is now at 30, versus 2016's 60th.

With anti-poachimg units and security deployed in the country's national parks to prevent wild poaching,
Private farms and lodges with rhinos are increasingly targeted. Muller has confirmed that all members of HoRn.nam are also private rhino owners who have anti-poaching teams.

HoRn.nam says on his Facebook page urgent change is now needed: "If dead rhinos are worth more than live rhinos, they will not survive. "

HoRn.nam believes that trade in rhino horn should be legalized soon before it is too late.

"Whether you are for or against the legalization of trade in rhino horn or a wire sitter, read more and make sure of the front and end disadvantages thereof. The benefits are far more than the disadvantages. "

HoRn.nam says "we need your support to support the custodians of these iconic species".

Renosterstropery: Private plase loop deur

Twee gestroop, vier gewond, kalfie vermis

Jaco Muller van die private renosterbewaringsorganisasie, Help our Rhinos Now Namibia (HorN.nam), gesê.

DRIE IN HEGTENIS
